About
This site aims to provide accurate forecasts for Monmouth County, New Jersey as well as information about board design, offshore coastal features, and occasional board reviews. Everything can be accessed via the NavBar at the top of the page.
This website doesn’t use any tracking features and respects your privacy. I don’t know what other sites you have visited or where you go from here. I don’t sell any information to outside sources and wouldn’t have any information anyway. The downside is that I don’t get any information about site usage. If you want to chat about what you like and don’t like, you can reach me on my instagram account (@jettywatchforecast).
Read below for an explanation of each page as well as some how-to-use information for the forecasts.
Forecasting
As a local New Jersey surfer, I was pretty unhappy with the available written forecasts I could find. Surfline tends to struggle with swells other than those from the southeast. Other, local forecast providers update their forecasts too infrequently to get up-to-date information, making it difficult to plan the best time to get to the beach. As someone trying to work surfing into my day to day that includes work and family responsibilities, I found myself spending a fair amount of time crafting my own forecasts.
Currently, I primarily make weekly forecasts with a looking ahead section if there is enough evidence of a better swell. After a brief overview of the week, I break down individual days into expected swell, period, swell direction, wind/wind direction, and energy percentile.
Board Design
One of my interests is making boards. I’ve spent quite a bit of time understanding what makes boards go and how each feature contributes to the overall performance of a surfboard. While no feature can truly be taken in the abstract, I do believe there’s some general things that can be said that are consistently true across designs.
Along with information about board design, I’ve also included information about marketing terminology and wave characteristics. At the end of the page you’ll find information about how to pick a board, and lastly, how to pick proper fins that make your board perform at its best.

Coastal Features
I grew up near Virginia Beach but spent a lot of my time in the Outer Banks. After learning to surf at a young age, I always wondered why the OBX had such better waves than Virginia Beach given how geographically close they are and given how the same storm systems sent similar swell. This page features information about the continental shelf and gives one of the main explanations for why certain stretches of beach along the East Coast are so much better than others.

About Me
My name is Kyle and I’ve been surfing most of my life. I became interested in surf forecasting several years ago and as I got more experience with programming, I wanted to create a site for local text-based surf forecasts. From looking at weather charts and buoy data year after year, I have a pretty good understanding of what a swell will look like once it arrives to our beaches. I use a number of different models and local forecasts as well as some models I’ve made to translate offshore boundary conditions into expected wave heights.
